What kind of poems you should read today?

Is reading poetry worth today? In the present scenario when we are suffering and suffering constantly, the admirers of poetry will say that we do need to have such kinds of recreational activities like reading poetry. However, is it that effective? Will poetry save us from boredom or it will just further augment the pain? There may be many opinions about it. The idea is simple – should one read poetry today?

While I won't answer the question directly, I will lead the readers to certain assertions and assumptions. What is poetry and what does it intend to do? A person reads a poem to feel refreshed, energised and charged to move ahead with fresh energy. However, then everything comes down to choosing your poems wisely because there might be depressing poems waiting for you... there was a phase in the life of Sylvia Plath when she only wrote depressing poems. A poem written by a poet is more or less a reflection of his or her mood... thoughts and actions. Who can forget The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot?

Modern poems, be any language that you like to read, are vivid in nature. There are the poets who are the master of writing poems of various kinds and they can very well keep their personal reflection limited so that a reader cannot guess what might be on that side of the paper. Such poets, let me tell, are nothing lesser than God-sent angels in the modern century. You should read those as these poems will make you feel better, relax you to the bed and will give you positive vibes to take with you to your workplace. However, there are the poets in India, especially, who have become poets after their pretty hearts have been broken by the ones they used to love and such poets, let me be blunt, are the best ignored. So, when it comes to choosing your titles as a casual reader of poetry, you should play your cards wisely. Read the title, read a few beginning poems and also read the blurb for reviews or author notes.

At the same time, in the same breath, let me also confess that intellectual poetry is not sad poetry. It is a form of serious poetry that asks difficult questions of the readers and these questions keep them indulged in the activity of poetry reading. So, you can read intellectual poems if you have that patience to wait with the text and wait for the divine spark to strike and you get the sense or the clear interpretation out of the verse you are reading. You can also explore some of the top Indian book bloggers for the reviews they have done of any recent poetry collection. You will have a lot of options to choose from.
